Acquisition requirements:
Acquisition permit
To become a permanent owner of a firearm requiring a permit, one needs a so-called acquisition permit.
We have compiled the most common permits below:
"old" Yellow WBK
Until 31 March 2003, the "old" firearms ownership card was issued for sport shooters. According to § 58 para. 1 sentence 3 WaffG, this continues to be valid to the same extent (old WaffG). The "old" yellow WBK includes the unlimited-in-time and quantity permit for the acquisition and possession of single-shot long guns (with rifled and smooth barrels).
"new" Yellow WBK
The "new" yellow WBK (§ 14 para. 4 WaffG) has been valid since 1 April 2003 for all four types of weapons mentioned below, observing the acquisition restriction (max. 2 weapons per half year). Content-related restrictions are not permitted.
Time-limited, quantity-unlimited permit (note: from 1 September 2020, this is expected to be limited to a maximum of 10) for the acquisition and possession of:
- Single-shot long guns with smooth and rifled barrels
- Repeating long guns with rifled barrels
- Single-barrel single-shot handguns for cartridge ammunition
- Multi-shot handguns and long guns with percussion ignition (percussion weapons)
Green WBK
The green WBK is the acquisition permit according to § 14 para. 2 WaffG. It authorises the acquisition of the following types of weapons:
- Handguns (pistols, revolvers)
- Self-loading rifles and self-loading shotguns (semi-automatic long guns)
For the acquisition of weapons, the green WBK with the corresponding pre-entry by the local authority must be presented (this also applies to hunting handguns for hunters). The pre-entry is usually valid for one year from issuance.
Red WBK
The Red WBK for weapons collectors and weapons experts authorises the acquisition and possession of weapons that are covered by the respective collection area/wording specified in the WBK.
Valid annual hunting licence
The valid hunting licence is an acquisition permit for all hunting long guns, i.e., for all long guns that are not prohibited for hunting according to § 19 BJagdG. The valid annual hunting licence also authorises the acquisition of the appropriate silencer for your hunting rifle. Since September 2020, we additionally require a copy of the green WBK, as well as your NWR IDs.
Hunters who are in possession of a hunting licence (in the sense of § 15 BJagdG), which is valid for the current year, are authorised to acquire all long guns that are not explicitly prohibited by the Federal Hunting Act (§ 19 BJagdG). For the acquisition of handguns, hunters also require an official acquisition permit, i.e., a pre-entry in the green WBK.
ATTENTION:
- Pay attention to the expiry date of the hunting licence!
- A youth hunting licence does NOT authorise the permanent acquisition of firearms (cf. § 13 para. 7 WaffG).
A regulation for all acquisition permits is that the purchased weapon must be registered with the competent authority within 14 days and the WBK presented for the necessary entry.
Acquisition of ammunition
Ammunition acquisition with WBK
The permit for the acquisition and possession of ammunition for the firearms entered in the WBK is usually granted by an entry in the WBK - for the firearms / calibres that are entered. Note: "For the firearms entered therein" means that the ammunition suitable for the respective weapon can be acquired (e.g., a .357 Magnum revolver can also fire .38 Special).
Ammunition acquisition with a valid hunting licence
This authorises the acquisition of any long gun ammunition that is permitted according to the Federal Hunting Act.
Ammunition Acquisition Certificate (MES)
This authorises the acquisition and possession of the ammunition specified in the MES.
